North Korea hinted at the possibility of resuming high-level bilateral contract, saying it is ready to sincerely discuss all pending issues to improve ties with South Korea.
The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday that North Korean government officials, lawmakers and organizations expressed such readiness when they held a joint meeting to discuss follow-up measures to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s New Year’s address.
The meeting’s participants stressed that high-level bilateral contact could resume and other bilateral meetings could take place if South Korea chooses to sincerely improve South-North ties through dialogue.
However, the participants added that the South must scrap what the North called a “reckless” vision for unification. They urged that civic groups halt distribution of anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets and South Korea and the U.S. cancel joint military drills.
The North holds such a meeting every year after its leader gives his New Year’s address.
Despite the latest reiteration, the North has yet to respond to Seoul’s offer to hold talks which came more than three weeks ago.
