President Park Geun-hye told officials to instill young people with a spirit of challenge by innovating college education, and to boldly reform college evaluation methods.
President Park made the remarks at a policy briefing by six government agencies on Thursday, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
She stressed that the government must fundamentally change the ecosystem of higher education to produce more daring and creative students, adding that the transformation of colleges will depend on how they are evaluated.
Regarding the government's welfare policy, Park said the government will lighten the hardships of the people by reinforcing welfare through jobs. She said the government's role is to create a foothold for people who are able to work by creating jobs for them.
Park also asked the officials to do their best to create a pleasant and healthy living environment, saying it is one of the most basic elements of happiness.
Presidential Chief of Staff Kim Ki-choon, who is facing pressure to step down, has been absent from four policy briefings so far. The last time he attended a policy briefing was last Thursday on economic reform.
