South Korea’s Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae says that the government could resume tours to North Korea’s Mount Geumgang resort.
The minister said during an interview with a local news agency on Sunday that the government is willing to revive the tour program, but the first thing to do is to address the reason for the suspension of the tour through inter-Korean dialogue.
The inter-Koran tour program was suspended in 2008 after a South Korean tourist was shot dead at the resort by a North Korean coast guard.
Regarding concerns that resuming the tour program would violate United Nations imposed sanctions on the North, the minister said that it is a matter to be decided by the U.N. Security Council.
On the possibility of an inter-Korean summit within this year, Ryoo said that it is not meaningful for the leaders of the two Koreas to just meet, adding a summit should be held only when it can contribute to peace and reunification.
