Government to Present DMZ Park Project to N. Korea

The government is pushing for a meeting with North Korea during an international conference this week to present its plan to create a peace park in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

A Seoul official said Monday that the government will dispatch a delegation to the standing committee meeting of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands that will kick off in Gland, Switzerland Monday.

The South Korean delegation for the five-day conference will be composed of officials from the ministries of unification and environment and meet with the convention's Secretary General Christopher Briggs and Marco Lambertini, the director general of the World Wide Fund for Nature.

The official said the South Korean delegation will present to the North its plan to create an ecological park in the DMZ if there is a chance to meet with the North Korean delegation.

The North is also scheduled to attend the conference as an observer.

The Park Geun-hye administration announced the plan to build DMZ World Eco-Peace Park in 2013 as part of efforts to turn the DMZ into a symbol of peace.
