Seoul to Resume Paying for N. Korean Medical Workers' Training in Germany

South Korea has resumed its financial support to an international program training North Korean medical personnel in Germany.

The Unification Ministry said Wednesday that it decided to resume the support for the first time in six years by providing 90 million won from the inter-Korean cooperation fund for the program.

With the money, the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare will fund a North Korean medical training program in Germany, run by the German-Korean (DPRK) Medical Association.

The association began inviting North Korean medical personnel to Germany in 2001 for training on advanced technology.

The Seoul government provided 60 million won to the program in both 2008 and 2009 but suspended the support under the ban on inter-Korean exchange following North Korea's torpedoing of a South Korean Navy vessel in early 2010.
