N. Korea's Import of IT from China Hits Record High

North Korea’s import of information and communication technology devices from China hit a record high last year.

New data from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) showed Friday that the North imported 82-point-84 million dollars’ worth of wireless telephones from China in 2014.

That is nearly double the amount of imports recorded in 2013, and the biggest since the KITA began tracking the data in 2007.

The North also imported 23 million dollars’ worth of portable computing devices, such as laptop computers, from China last year, up 16 percent from 2013.

Roughly two-point-four million North Koreans, or about 10 percent of the country’s population, are said to have been using mobile phones as of June last year.
