A South Korean government official is said to have presented plans on creating a peace park in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to a North Korean official at a meeting in Switzerland last week.
A Unification Ministry official in Seoul said Tuesday that a member of the South Korean delegation to the 48th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands unofficially gave the brief last Wednesday.
The ministry official said the North Korean delegate listened to the explanation, but gave no particular response.
The ministry official said the government delegation, comprised of officials from the ministries of unification and environment, also described the envisioned peace park to international organizations on the sidelines of the meeting and received positive responses.
Building the “DMZ World Eco-Peace Park” was one of President Park Geun-hye’s campaign promises with the aim of turning the DMZ into a symbol of peace.
The North has expressed disapproval over the idea, saying the plan is aimed only at attracting foreign tourists and making money.
