N. Korea Asks UN to Nullify Rights Resolution

North Korea has sent a letter to the United Nations asking for the world body to revoke a 2014 resolution against the North's human rights situation.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said that Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong sent the letter to the UN secretary-general and the President of the UN General Assembly.

The state-run media said the letter called for revoking the human rights resolution as it argued that the document was adopted based on false testimony from North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk.

In the letter, the foreign minister is said to have asked for apologies from countries that presented the resolution including Japan and members of the European Union.

He said that if the resolution is withdrawn, North Korea would be open to dialogue and cooperation on human rights.

The minister also responded to a statement by former head of the UN Commission of Inquiry that Shin Dong-hyuk was only one of several hundred witnesses interviewed by the commission. The North Korean official said that if the UN produced a list of the witnesses, his country would prove them to be liars.

Ever since part of Shin’s testimony regarding North Korean prison camps was retracted, Pyongyang has been using media channels to demand that the UN nullify the human rights resolution.
