N. Korean Defectors Work More, Earn Less than Avg. S. Koreans

A recent survey has found that North Korean defectors who have settled in South Korea work more hours, but earn less money than average South Koreans.

The Ministry of Unification and the Korea Hana Foundation said on Monday that they found the results in a survey of 12-thousand-700 defectors, above 15 years of age, between July and September last year.

The average monthly income of defectors was one-million-471-thousand won last year, up 57-thousand won from 2013, but only 66 percent of the two-million-231-thousand won earned by South Koreans.

Defectors' worked an average of 47 hours per week, almost three hours more than South Koreans.

Their employment and jobless rates were 53-point-one percent and six-point-two percent respectively, as they faced tougher economic circumstances compared with 60-point-eight percent and three-point-two percent for South Koreans.
