University Reproduces Gold Thread Making Technology

A Korean university says it has reproduced a traditional technique for creating gold threads.

The Korea National University of Cultural Heritage said Wednesday that after four years of research, it had successfully reproduced the technologies needed to produce threads using gold, as well as techniques for using the gold threads to create designs on textiles.

The school said it had also restored three artifacts featuring gold thread embroideries that were placed inside a gold bronze Amitabha statue at Munsu Temple in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province.

The threads were made by slicing paper glued with gold foil. The technique was one of the fanciest in textile craftsmanship but the tradition was suspended since the use of gold threads was banned under Joseon Dynasty King Yeongjo.
