N. Korea Conducts 1st Flight Test of SLBM

North Korea conducted the first flight test of a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) last month.

The Washington Free Beacon, quoting U.S. military officials, reported Wednesday that the flight test of the KN-11 missile occurred on Jan. 23 off North Korea’s coast. The test is said to have taken place from a sea-based platform rather than a submarine.

A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment on additional details, citing the sensitivity of information about the North’s SLBM program.

The flight test came after the North conducted a land-based ejection test of the KN-11 from a static launcher in November.

Washington officials viewed the first test as an early stage test, but said Pyongyang was increasingly securing the ability to launch a nuclear attack from a submarine.
