4 out of 10 Koreans Say Marriage is Not Necessary

A survey has found four out of ten South Koreans believe that marriage is no longer a necessity.

According to Statistics Korea, 38-point-nine percent of respondents aged 13 or older said in the survey they have no preference over getting married or staying single. The rate is five-point-three percentage points higher from 2012.

Combined with two percent of respondents who answered it was best not to get married or that people should not marry, a total of 40-point-nine percent said they believe that marriage is not required.

Female respondents who said marriage was not necessary accounted for 43 percent compared to 34 percent among male respondents.

Based on age groups, 50 percent of 30-somethings said marriage is not a requirement, the highest among all groups. Only 20 percent of those in their 60s gave the same answer.
