Prof. Blames Japan for Extinction of Dokdo Sea Lions

A South Korean professor has blamed Japan for the extinction of sea lions on the country’s easternmost islet of Dokdo.

In a video clip posted on YouTube on Sunday, Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University said around 40-thousand 'Gangchi' sea lions lived on Dokdo, but went extinct due to overfishing by Japan in the 1900s.

The video, produced by Seo and narrated by actor Cho Jae-hyun, is in response to a video posted by Japan in January promoting its claim to the South Korean islets.

In the Japanese video, the Japanese government depicted Dokdo as its land that was once home to the sea lions.
