LG Life Sciences has received approval from the US Federal Drug Administration or FDA for an anti-biotic treating pneumonia in a first for the local pharmaceutical industry.

LG Life Sciences said Sunday that the US FDA has approved Factive, an antibiotic of the Quinolone family. The company developed and completed clinical trials for the medicine with GlaxoSmithKline(GSK) of the United Kingdom, the world's leading company for antibiotics, in December 1999.

The company started developing Factive in 1991 and completed clinical tests in more than 40 countries after making a strategic alliance with Smith Kine Beecham, a former entity of GSK, in 1997.
