A leading U.S. think tank said that North Korea’s growing nuclear, missile and cyberattack capabilities pose a threat to not only the Korean Peninsula, but also the United States.
In the “2015 Index of U.S. Military Strength” the Heritage Foundation said Tuesday that the Kim Jong-un regime is not interested in relinquishing its nuclear ambitions or returning to the six-party talks. The foundation said the North will continue developing nuclear weapons.
The think tank said it is highly possible the North has already secured the ability to miniaturize warheads and to mount a nuclear warhead on a medium-range missile, such as its Nodong missiles.
It said the North is not only equipped with hundreds of Scud short-range missiles, Nodong missiles and Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missiles, but also steadily improving its long-range inter-continental ballistic Taepodong missiles, which can reach the U.S. mainland.
Regarding the North’s cyber threat, the foundation said the North’s cyberwarfare personnel have jumped twofold to six-thousand in recent years. It said the North has launched a series of cyberattacks on South Korea and could launch an attack against the United States and its allies.
