N. Korean Shipping Firm Renames Vessels to Skirt Sanctions

A North Korean shipping company was found to have attempted to circumvent United Nations sanctions by renaming its vessels to obscure their origin.

A report published Wednesday by a panel of UN experts monitoring sanctions on the North disclosed that Pyongyang-based Ocean Maritime Management Company have changed their owners and managers since the company was put on the UN sanction list last year.

The UN Security Council imposed sanctions on the North Korean company after the Chong Chon Gang, one of the ships it operated, was caught in Panama in 2013 carrying undeclared military equipment from Cuba, including two Cuban fighter jets.

The report also said North Korean diplomats and officials continued to “play key roles in facilitating the trade of prohibited items, including arms and related material and ballistic missile-related items.”
