The government will meet with the heads of firms operating at the inter-Korean factory park to discuss North Korea’s unilateral move to raise the wages of its workers.
An official of the Ministry of Unification said Wednesday that it will hold a round-table meeting on Thursday with the South Korean representatives of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
The ministry will explain the government’s stance that it will not accept the North’s demand. It is said the ministry will ask the companies to pay the latest three-month salary without a wage hike.
Around 10 people, including Lee Kang-woo, a senior official of the Ministry of Unification, and Jung Ki-sup, the head of the association of South Korean companies at Gaeseong, will attend the meeting.
On February 24, the North unilaterally informed Seoul of its decision to raise the minimum monthly salary of North Korean workers at Gaeseong by five-point-18 percent to 74 dollars beginning in March.
Seoul said it wouldn’t accept the decision, and proposed a meeting of the Gaeseong complex joint management committee on March 13 to discuss the matter. The North has yet to respond to the proposal.
