The government says it will review whether to fund the cost of North Korea’s participation in this year’s Summer Universiade to be hosted by the city of Gwangju.
Following the North's official notice that it will take part in the summer games, South Korea's Unification Ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-cheol said in a briefing on Friday that Seoul will review the matter based on international practices and precedents.
The minister said the government conveyed North Korea's request for Seoul's cooperation to Universiade organizers.
Lim said if the need arises to fund the cost, the government will cooperate with organizers and related agencies to take necessary measures.
The spokesman also said he had no information on whether or not the North would send a cheering squad to the Gwangju games.
On Tuesday, North Korea sent to South Korea through the International University Sports Federation a formal letter of participation in the Summer Universiade to include 108 North Korean athletes and officials for competition in eight events.
