Gov’t to Urge Gaeseong Firms to Reject N. Korean Wage Hike Demand

The government will soon notify South Korean companies operating at the Gaeseong inter-Korean factory park urging them to reject North Korea’s unilateral demand of a wage hike.

An official of the unification ministry said it will deliver guidelines to companies operating at the joint factory park, stressing its stance that the North’s unilateral demand should not be recognized or accepted.

As a result, the guidelines will ask South Korean companies to pay North Korean workers in March without any increase in payment.

March wages will be paid to North Korean workers between April 10 and 20.

The government’s move is expected to invite strong opposition from North Korea.
