38 North: N. Korea Unlikely to Conduct Nuke Test Soon

North Korea-focused Web site, 38 North, said the reclusive country is unlikely to conduct nuclear or missile tests over the next few months.

The Web site, a research body of the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, published its assessment on Tuesday.

The site said recent commercial satellite imagery of the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site and the Sohae Satellite Launching Station “indicate only activities associated with maintenance during the winter months.”

The assessment noted that at the Punggye-ri site, satellite imagery shows only minor changes, and that the Sohae site appears to be dormant after a year of intense construction.

The analysis added that “while both sites are likely at a sufficient state of readiness to move forward with a test if ordered to do so by the North Korean leadership, there are no signs of preparations.”
