Gov't Searching for Alternative to Serial-Numbering of National Treasures

The government is considering whether to continue its current serial-numbering of the nation's historic assets.

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA) said Wednesday that it is reviewing ways to improve the system that has labeled such assets with their names, followed by notations such as "National Treasure No. 1."

The announcement comes in response to criticism that the numbering system appears to rank the value of the historic assets. Some critics also oppose the system, calling it a legacy of Japanese colonial rule.

CHA said it will hold a public hearing on the various alternative options by November, including designating a new national treasure no. 1 and scrapping the serial-number system.
