“Foreign Activists’ DMZ Walking Not Subject to Gov’t Jurisdiction”

The South Korean government said that a planned event to walk across the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas by foreign activists is beyond its jurisdiction.

Seoul's Unification Ministry official on Thursday addressed the U.S. based organizers’ plan for an event dubbed the "WomenCrossDMZ Peace Walk."

Following the announcement of the envisioned walk made by Gloria Steinem and some 30 other feminist activists, the official clarified that the plan is subject to the United Nations Command’s approval.

The official explained that the activists are not required to obtain approval of visit from the South Korean authorities under the Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Act as they are not citizens of South and North Korea.

However, the official noted that the activists will need to go through an immigration process when crossing the border from South to North Korea and vice versa.

The ministry official added that when the women send details of their plan, including the route to North Korea, the Unification Ministry will have to discuss the matter with other related ministries including the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

About 30 women from 12 countries including Steinem of the U.S. are planning the "WomenCrossDMZ Peace Walk" in May to call for Korea's reunification. They held a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday and expressed their wish to walk the DMZ to call for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula.

Steinem told the New York Times that North Korea approved the event, but the South Korean government has yet to respond.
