N. Korea Fires 7 Surface-to-Air Missiles into East Sea Late Thursday

North Korea fired seven surface-to-air missiles late Thursday into international waters of the East Sea.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the North fired the missiles between six and seven in the evening on Thursday from Seondeok, South Hamgyeong Province, into international waters of the East Sea.

Along with SA-2 and SA-3 missiles, Pyongyang is believed to have fired its 250-kilometer-range SA-5 surface-to-air missiles for the first time during the exercise.

An official at the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North again failed to declare no-fly and no-sail zones before launching its missiles.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is said to have visited the test firing site.

The JCS believes the latest test-firing is in protest to ongoing military drills by South Korea and the U.S., and is stepping up its surveillance on additional potential launches.
