'Uranium Bombs to Account for 60% of N. Korea's Nuclear Arsenal'

A United States nuclear expert says that uranium bombs could account for up to 60 percent of North Korea's nuclear arsenal by 2020.

David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security said that North Korea is estimated to have eight nuclear weapons built with highly enriched uranium out of its 15 to 16 nuclear weapons.

Albright projected that if the North’s nuclear stockpile reaches 100 nuclear weapons by 2020, uranium bombs could account for up to 60 percent of the reclusive state’s nuclear stockpile.

The nuclear expert said that Pyongyang seems to be enriching uranium at a secret location other than the Yeongbyon nuclear site, adding he is looking at three possible areas to see if they are the secret facilities.

There are concerns that uranium bombs would complicate the North’s nuclear issue as highly enriched uranium is easier to make than weapons-grade plutonium.
