Silla Dynasty Relics Unearthed from Historic Site in Gyeongju

A large number of relics and artifacts from the Silla Dynasty have been unearthed in Gyeongju, the capital of the ancient kingdom in the southeastern part of the peninsula.

The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage said Wednesday that earthenware and roof tiles from the ancient periods of the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla have been found at the ruins of Wolseong Palace.

The institute said that the newly found relics were unearthed from the top layer of the site and more precious artifacts could be found if the excavation proceeds in full swing.

The institute has been conducting an excavation survey at the site since December. It plans to seek approval for a full-fledged excavation of the site in a session of the Cultural Properties Committee set for Friday.

Wolseong Palace was the royal palace compound of the Silla monarchy, built by King Pasa in AD 101.
