A seal of the Joseon Dynasty being kept in a U.S. museum will be returned to South Korea next week.
The Cultural Heritage Administration said Wednesday that a ceremony will be held next Wednesday at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul to celebrate the return of the ceremonial seal “deokjongeobo.” Officials from the Seattle Art Museum where the seal has been kept for more than 50 years will be in attendance.
King Seongjong of the 15th century had the seal produced in honor of his father who died without having assumed the throne.
The ceremonial seal used by the royal family had been kept at Jongmyo Shrine but was carried out of the country in the 1920s during Japanese colonial rule. The seal is said to have been donated to the Seattle Art Museum by an art collector in 1963.
Last year, the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Seattle Art Museum agreed to have the seal returned to South Korea in the form of a donation.
