South and North Korean Buddhists to Hold Joint Service

Buddhist leaders from South and North Korea will hold a joint service to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Korea’s independence.

South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, said Thursday that the Ven. Jaseung made the agreement with the head of the North’s Buddhist federation Kang Su-rin in Shenyang, China Thursday. The joint service will be held either at the North’s Mount Geumgang or in Gaeseong around August 15.

The two leaders also agreed to jointly preserve and exhibit Buddhist cultural artifacts and to excavate Buddhist remains.

The South’s Ven. Chungwang of the Cheontae Order will also meet Kang in Shenyang on Saturday to discuss Buddhist exchanges between the two Koreas.
