VOA: N. Korea Positive about UN-S. Korea Aquaculture Project

North Korea is said to have responded positively to a United Nations proposal to develop fish farms in the North alongside South Korea.

According to a Voice of America (VOA) report on Friday, a senior official of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) told VOA on Thursday that although North Korea has yet to sign an official agreement, it has consented to the proposal on the condition that the project is led by the FAO.

The Seoul-based Korea Maritime Institute plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the FAO next month to cooperate on a joint research project regarding the North’s aquaculture industry.

The MOU is expected to include the goal of procuring 150-thousand dollars between 2015 and 2016, needed to assess the North’s aquaculture industry, develop fish farms appropriate for the weather conditions and foster North Korean human resources in the industry.
