June 15 Committees to Hold Joint Event in Seoul

The South Korean committee for the implementation of the inter-Korean June 15 declaration is seeking to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the landmark agreement with its North Korean and overseas counterparts in Seoul.

The South Korean June 15th committee on Wednesday held a news conference in Seoul and announced the launch of a preparatory committee for the event.

The preparatory committee said that the North Korean and overseas June 15th committees have expressed their consent for the joint celebration. The three sides will meet later this month to finalize details for the event.

The North Korean committee had proposed holding a similar event last year in Gaeseong, but the plan fell through as the South Korean Unification Ministry disapproved of the event. South Korea has prohibited inter-Korean events marking the anniversary of the June 15 declaration since it imposed economic sanctions against the North in 2010.
