Traditional Korean paper known as "hanji" will be used in the restoration of a globe, owned by a museum dedicated to Pope John XXIII in Bergamo, Italy.

South Korea's Consul General to Milan Chang Jae-bok said Thursday that an expert who participated in a workshop last year on restoring ancient documents with hanji decided to use the paper after taking charge in the restoration of the globe.

Pope John XXIII is said to have received the globe, with a circumference of about 4 meters, as a gift in the 1960s.

Chang said the use of hanji is meaningful as Japanese traditional paper has often been used by restorers of cultural assets.
