The South Korean government has said it will provide necessary support for the Korean Demilitarized Zone-crossing event planned by female activists from around the world.
A Unification Ministry official told reporters Thursday that Seoul understands the cause of the event, while stressing that it should be held in the context of a purely social and cultural exchange without causing friction in inter-Korean relations or in South Korea's domestic politics.
Members of the campaign titled WomenCrossDMZ Peace Walk 2015, including U.S. activist Gloria Steinem, held a news conference at UN headquarters in New York on March 11 and announced their plan to walk across the heavily fortified inter-Korean border.
They intend to march from North Korea to South Korea across the Demilitarized Zone with the wish for peace on the Korean Peninsula and Korean unification.
Crossing the DMZ is known to require the approval of both South and North Korean governments as well as the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission.
