S. Korea to Promote Inter-Korean Sports, Cultural Exchanges

The government will promote inter-Korean sporting and cultural events this year to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

The Unification Ministry reported to the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs and unification on Tuesday that it will propose a soccer match and bouts of traditional Korean wrestling or “ssireum” between the two Koreas.

The ministry will also support the North’s participation in international sporting events held in the South, including the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade and an international military multi-sports event.

It also plans to discuss joint events in other sectors, such as inviting the North to the UNESCO World Education Forum 2015 in Incheon.

The government will also propose the creation of a joint organization in charge of holding inter-Korean events.
