Two Koreas to Discuss Gaeseong Wages

The two Koreas will hold another round of talks Monday over the wage dispute at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

The Ministry of Unification said South Korea's Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee and the North's Central Special Zone Development Guidance General Bureau will meet Monday to make adjustments to a pay increase pledge which the North has demanded of South Korean companies.

The two organizations held talks on Friday, but failed to reach a compromise.

The unification ministry said it will take measures against 18 companies operating in the industrial park that paid March wages to the North despite government opposition. The companies paid the March wages based on the existing pay scale, but promised to pay a late fee on the wage difference which the North has been demanding.

The pledge confirms that the companies will pay a late fee on the wage difference if the firms proceed to pay the minimum wage of 70 dollars and 35 cents for March, as opposed to the 74 dollars demanded by Pyongyang.

South Korean companies operating in the complex plan to hold an emergency board meeting Tuesday to demand additional measures from the government if the two Koreas fail to reach a compromise on Monday.
