Little Progress Made on Gaeseong Wage Dispute

The two Koreas have yet to narrow their differences over the wage dispute at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

An official of the Ministry of Unification said Wednesday that South Korea’s Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee and the North’s Central Special Zone Development Guidance General Bureau held an additional round of talks Tuesday, but did not produce any substantial results.

The official said the two sides remain at odds over the North’s demand of a written promise from the South Korean companies operating in the complex to pay overdue wages and late fees.

The North is demanding that the companies pay the wage difference if the firms proceed to pay the minimum wage of 70 dollars and 35 cents for March, as opposed to the 74 dollars demanded by Pyongyang.

In response, the South Korean government said it can neither consent to the unilateral decision by the North to raise wages nor approve of South Korean companies paying late fees.

The Ministry of Unification official said the two sides will meet again on Wednesday to continue the talks.

The representatives of the South Korean companies, who convened an emergency board meeting on Tuesday, said they will watch Wednesday’s talks before demanding additional measures from the government.
