Korea-China Pair Wins World Table Tennis Championships

Korea's leading female table tennis player Yang Ha-eun has won the nation's first gold in 26 years in mixed doubles at the 2015 World Championships.

In the finals held on Friday in Suzhou, China, Yang paired up with Chinese table tennis star and world number-two Xu Xin, and took the title by defeating their Japanese rivals 4-0.

Clinching the title in the mixed doubles event at the world championships is the first for a South Korean since 1989 when the Korean pair Yoo Nam-kyu and Hyun Jung-hwa were crowned champions.

Yang Ha-eun and Xu Xin will also go down as the first transnational team to have won gold at the table tennis tournament.

Starting this year, the International Table Tennis Federation allowed mixed doubles to have partners from different nationalities with the aim of scaling down the size of the championships and also to reduce the dominance of Chinese players.
