Gov't: N. Korea Detains S. Korean Citizen for Illegal Entrance

The government has confirmed that North Korea is detaining a South Korean citizen for illegally entering the country last month.

Seoul's Foreign Ministry said Sunday that it is trying to determine more details about the detainment. A ministry official said it had confirmed the nationality and address of the man in his 20s.

The confirmation came as the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said Saturday that the South Korean citizen, Joo Won-moon, was detained after illegally entering the North by crossing the Amnok River from Dandong, China on April 22.

The report described Joo as a U.S. green card holder and a junior at New York University.

The ministry official said the government was in close contact with the man’s family, his school and the South Korean embassy in the U.S. The official added that the ministry is consulting with the Unification Ministry on the matter.
