Baekje Sites Poised to Join UNESCO World Heritage List

The remains of the ancient kingdom of Baekje are poised to secure a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The Korean Cultural Heritage Administration said Tuesday that the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has submitted a report proposing the Baekje historical sites for inclusion on the list.

The council offers advice to UNESCO on world heritage sites, and so far every proposal made by the agency has received a designation.

Earlier, the council evaluated the eight historical sites of Baekje, including Gongsan Castle and the ruins in Buyeo in South Chungcheong Province as well as Iksan in North Jeolla Province.

UNESCO will make a decision on whether to include the Baekje sites during the World Heritage Committee meeting beginning on June 28.

If designated, the Baekje remains will be South Korea’s 12th inscription on the UNESCO world heritage list.
