As children honored their parents on Friday, the son of a man who was abducted by North Korea during the hijacking of Korean Air Lines YS-11 in 1969 delivered 45 red carnations to the Unification Ministry.
Hwang In-cheol delivered the flowers to express hope for the return of the hijacked family members.
In December 1969, Korean Air Lines YS-11 departed from Gangneung in Gangwon Province carrying 51 passengers and crew members. The flight was bound for Seoul when it was hijacked by North Korean agent, Cho Chang-hee.
In February of the following year, the North returned 39 people through the truce village of Panmunjeom. However, the remaining eleven, including Hwang’s father, never returned home.
Along with the flowers, Hwang delivered a letter in which he urged the government to call on North Korean authorities to repatriate the remaining South Koreans by June 17.
The 45 carnations that Hwang delivered signify each year he spent without his father.
