North Korea claims to have successfully test-fired an underwater ballistic missile from a submarine.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Saturday that upon order of fire by leader Kim Jong-un, the submarine quickly dived into the deep sea, firing the ballistic missiles that soared into the sky from underwater.
The news agency stressed that the test-fire had verified that the nation’s underwater ballistic missile capabilities had fully reached the level of the latest military science and technology.
However, it did not specify the exact time and location of the test-fire, only saying it took place remotely distanced from land.
The firing is presumed to have taken place in waters near Sinpo, South Hamkyong Province on the east coast, as Kim Jong-un was reported to have visited a fishery complex in Sinpo on the same day. A submarine base is also located on an island in nearby waters.
Earlier in February, North Korea revealed that it had carried out a test of a missile ejection launcher from the coast near Sinpo a month earlier.
