Seoul City has announced a plan to create a history and culture space in the Sejong-daero area in downtown Seoul.

The city government said on Monday that it will demolish the Seoul Regional Tax Office Namdaemun Annex building, which was built in 1937 by the Japanese to block the view of Deoksu Palace during its colonial rule of the peninsula.

Columns and walls of the building will not be destroyed, but preserved as historical remains.

The city said that it will use the site to create a space that keeps historical data and documents as well as a cultural plaza for citizens.

It said that the demolition work will begin this month and an event will be held marking the demolition on Liberation Day on August 15.
