North Korea’s ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva has demanded that the U.S. scrap the North Korean Human Rights Act.
The Voice of America (VOA) said Tuesday that So Se-pyong made the call during a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review on Monday.
So claimed that the U.S. government must unconditionally scrap all laws related to human rights being applied extraterritorially, including the North Korean Human Rights Act.
He denounced the law as a clear violation of North Korea’s sovereignty and an infringement of its people’s rights and dignity.
The U.S. delegation at Monday’s meeting is said to have not responded to So’s remarks.
The North Korean Human Rights Act was signed into law in 2004. The law was extended twice and will be in force until 2017.
