AMCHAM Leaders Stress Different Approach to N. Korea

American business leaders active in South Korea have recommended their home government take a different approach from Iraq in dealing with North Korea.

President William Oberlin of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, and former president of the group, Jeffrey Jones, met with U.S. political and business leaders in Washington and New York from April 7th through 10th.

The AMCHAM officials said South and North Korea have made significant progress in reconciliation and peace, and continue to engage in dialogue. They said that unlike Iraq, North Korea has not used weapons of mass destruction nor invaded neighboring countries.

They also said South Korea's macroeconomic situation is strong and its current woes are caused by a crisis of confidence, not a financial crisis ... pointing to the country's foreign reserves of more than one hundred-20 billion dollars ... one of the highest levels in the world.

The AMCHAM leaders also called for the United States to ease strict visa regulations for South Korean visitors.
