Gov't Willing to Discuss Gaeseong Wage Hikes

The Unification Ministry said it is open to discussing amending the increment cap on Gaeseong workers' minimum wage, if the South-North joint committee managing the inter-Korean complex resumes talks.

A ministry official said Tuesday that its key objection was the North's unilateral revision of wage regulations, not raising the Gaeseong workers' monthly minimum wage by five-point-18 percent.

The official added the North’s move had harmed the agreement between the two Koreas to jointly manage the industrial complex.

In November last year, North Korea unilaterally revised 13 articles of labor regulations for the industrial complex that included removing the ceiling of the increment rate of the minimum wage.

Last Friday, the South suggested holding a meeting to discuss wage hikes for North Korean workers, but North Korea rejected the proposal.
