Gaeseong Firms to Pay Wages This Week

South Korean companies operating in the Gaeseong Industrial Complex will pay North Korean workers this week.

An official of an association of South Korean firms operating in the complex said Monday that South Korea’s Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee and the North’s Central Special Zone Development Guidance General Bureau agreed on the wage payments last week.

Under the agreement, South Korean firms will pay March and April wages by May 30. The wages had been delayed due to an ongoing dispute between the two Koreas following North Korea’s demand for pay hikes.

The two sides agreed Friday that South Korean firms would first pay the wages based on the original 70-point-35 U.S. dollars per month, with possible retroactive wages to be paid based on the outcome of further negotiations.
