Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has vowed to sharply reduce advertising if the television license fee is raised, calling for a swift hike.
KBS President Cho Dae-hyun held a news conference on Monday, pledging to cut 200-billion-won worth of advertising a year if the National Assembly passes a pending bill that would raise television license fees by 15-hundred won.
Cho said that if the bill passes, KBS 2TV would eliminate all advertising on weekdays.
The measures would decrease KBS’ annual advertising revenue to 410 billion won, reducing the proportion of KBS’s advertising income in its total budget from the current 40 percent to 20 percent.
Cho also vowed that KBS would play the role of public broadcaster by producing quality content such as documentaries and historical dramas.
In addition, he promised to introduce measures to enhance management effectiveness such as the wage peak system and performance-based salaries.
