Pyeongchang Olympics to Bestow Record No. of Gold Medals

The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang will bestow a record number of gold medals as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved new events for the games.

At a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland Monday, the IOC Executive Board decided to add six events and drop two, raising the number of gold medals to 102.

The new events include mass start speed skating for men and women, a forte for South Korea, as well as mixed doubles in curling, team events in alpine skiing and big air for men and women in snowboarding.

To make room for the new events, the IOC dropped the men's and women's snowboard parallel slalom.

It is the first time that the number of gold medals will surpass 100 at a winter Olympics. The previous winter games in Sochi awarded only 98 gold medals.
