A conference marking the 15th anniversary of the June 15 inter-Korean summit was held at the Kim Dae-jung Presidential Library at Yonsei University on Tuesday.
In a keynote speech, Representative Park Jie-won of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy urged Seoul to lift the so-called May 24 sanctions, which were slapped on the North in 2010 after the sinking of the Cheonan naval corvette.
Park said lifting the sanctions would enable both Koreas to thrive, while paving the way for unification for the sake of future generations. He said the sanctions should be removed so that the North can be led toward reform and openness.
Former Unification Minister Lim Dong-won said the June 15 summit epitomized the two Koreas’ desire to overcome division. He said if the South is willing to improve its ties with the North, President Park Geun-hye should observe the June 15 Joint Declaration and announce her intention to inherit it.
