'N. Korean Workers in Mongolia Suffering from Forced Labor'

The Voice of America (VOA) said Wednesday that the International Labor Organization (ILO) urged the Mongolian government to improve working conditions for North Koreans working in the east-central Asian nation.

Sophy Fisher, senior communication and public information officer of the ILO’s Office for Asia and the Pacific, told VOA that North Korean laborers toiling in small-sized textile factories and construction sites in Mongolia are being forcibly employed under conditions that fall far short of conditions of normal labor markets.

Claiming that North Korean workers are suffering from forced labor, Fisher said they have not been paid wages or are bribing their superiors.

Fisher said the ILO has recommended on several occasions that the Mongolian government correct the poor working environment for North Korean workers.
