N. Korea Suspends Mobile Internet Service

Mobile 3G Internet service for foreigners in North Korea has been suspended.

Reuters reported on Saturday that service provider Koryolink sent a notice in English to its subscribers Friday afternoon explaining that it is facing an internet service outage resulting from the local internet provider and will notify when the service resumes.

The provider reportedly did not elaborate why access to the mobile network was restricted and when it will resume. The service was suspended after a fire at Koryo Hotel in Pyongyang, but it is not clear whether the service outage was related to the incident.

North Koreans are unable to access outside uncensored Internet websites and portals, but foreign residents and visitors to the North are able to buy 3G mobile SIM cards which are largely unrestricted.
