South Korea will take the top honors for the first time at a Summer Universiade.
The South Korean team won nine gold medals on Sunday, two days before the games wrap up. With its 44 gold medals, South Korea has reserved the top place regardless of the results on Monday and Tuesday.
Second-place Russia and third-place China have 32 gold medals each, but Russia may win up to nine gold medals in the remaining two days while China could win a total of seven.
On Sunday, star athlete Son Yeon-jae won gold in the individual all-around rhythmic gymnastics by earning a combined 72-point-550 points in ball, hoop, clubs and ribbon.
In tennis, top-seeded Chung Hyeon captured the men's singles gold medal. Chung's singles title also gave South Korea the men's team gold medal, awarded to the country with the most points won from medals.
South Korea also won five gold medals in badminton. It picked up gold in mixed doubles, men's doubles, women's doubles, men's singles and women's singles.
Kim Min-jeong also added gold in women's under 53 kilo taekwondo.
The Gwangju Summer Universiade will be the second time South Korea has ranked first in Universiade events, after the 2007 Winter Universiade in Torino, Italy.
